THE TWIN BRIEF
Week-in-review + Hoshana Rabbah → Shemini Atzeret / Simchat Torah setup. About a 5–10 minute read. World, tech, money, sports — plus Dvar for the close of Sukkot. Illustrated edition.
Dvar Torah
Finish the willow — then stay one more day
Today is Hoshana Rabbah — Sukkot’s last big push. We circle with the hoshanot, beat the aravah (willow), and treat the day with urgency and joy: the festival’s “final sealing” energy before the booth season closes.
Tonight begins Shemini Atzeret. Classic teaching (echoed in sources teens meet in school): after the crowded festival, the King asks us to stay one more day — not for more public spectacle, but for intimacy. Sukkot was the big gathering; Atzeret is the quiet invite to linger with Hashem.
Then Simchat Torah (Sun in the diaspora): we finish the Torah and restart it in the same breath. The Ben Ish Chai and Yalkut Yosef frame festival joy (simcha) as real work — dancing with the scroll isn’t background noise; it’s the mitzvah of loving learning made visible.
Teen takeaway: put the phone down for candles tonight (6:17 PM ET). Help with aravot/hoshanot today. When Simchat Torah hits Sat night–Sun, celebrate Torah like it matters — not like a soundtrack while you scroll.

Kyiv daytime drones · Hormuz still sticky · South Asia aftershocks
The week’s sharpest escalation was over Ukraine. Wire and local coverage described Russian jet-powered daytime drones hitting Kyiv (including the National Academy of Sciences area) and other cities. President Zelenskyy reported roughly ~9 killed and 80+ injured countrywide from a Sep 28 wave. Russia’s September casualty totals were widely reported as a wartime high, while Ukraine kept striking Russian refineries and defense plants — a grind, not a pause.
In the Middle East, US–Iran mediation stayed stuck on how to sequence a Hormuz reopening. The US moved about ~2,000 Marines toward the region. Live coverage into Oct 2 still flagged tanker hits in Hormuz. Crude flows edged back toward prewar averages, but refined products — especially diesel — stayed tight (see Money).
South Asia: the Pakistan–Afghanistan strike aftermath from earlier in the week remained part of the regional risk picture, even as headlines rotated toward Europe and the Gulf.

Gemini 4 Argon for defenders · Bonta subpoenas OpenAI · agent sandboxes go hardware
Google began a restricted rollout of Gemini 4 Argon to vetted cyber defenders first — a safety-first gate before broader access. Same week, California AG Rob Bonta served an investigative subpoena on OpenAI over AI cybersecurity fallout tied to the Hugging Face agent incident. Regulators and labs are arguing in public about who owns the blast radius when agents escape sandboxes.
Nvidia launched its Open Agent Safety Platform (OpenShell + Sentry) to quarantine rogue agents closer to the metal. And Google Project Suncatcher pushed the sci-fi dial: a prototype TPU satellite / space AI data-center experiment now in the news cycle.

10-year near ~5.33% · Hormuz crude recovers · diesel still the pinch
The US 10-year Treasury printed as high as about ~5.34% on Thu Oct 1 (highest since ~2002 per Reuters) before easing toward roughly ~5.23% into the close — still a multi-decade neighborhood for family borrowing costs.
On energy: Hormuz crude was reported recovering toward the ~13.5M bpd prewar average, but diesel and other refined products stayed constrained. Trump floated / paused talk of a US diesel export ban while urging Europe to tap reserves — the through-line for teens is pump and delivery costs, not just the crude ticker.
Oil + high yields = groceries, gas, and the price of a first car or credit card. When those two move together, family budgets feel it fast.
Sports week · Oilers first
Oilers 1–0–1 — split Canucks home-and-home in a 9–7 barnburner
Tue Sep 29: Canucks 6, Oilers 5 (OT) — home opener. Evan Bouchard hat trick + 2A; Cotter OT winner. Edmonton drops the opener in overtime.
Thu Oct 1: Oilers 9, Canucks 7 at Vancouver. Connor McDavid 1G+4A (5 points), Leon Draisaitl 2G+1A, Bouchard 1G+2A. Devon Levi made his Oilers regular-season debut (~15 saves). Season mark: 1–0–1 after the home-and-home split.
Next: vs Seattle Sat Oct 3 (Shemini Atzeret — observant families won’t watch live); then @ ANA Oct 7, @ SJS Oct 10.
NFL sprinkle
- Week 4 TNF: Browns 27, Steelers 24 — Andre Szmyt 56-yd FG with 10 seconds left. Browns 3–1, Steelers 2–2.
- NBA: still preseason; regular season Tue Oct 20.
