Defense missiles vs. Iran’s attacks — and why stockpiles matter
An interceptor is a defensive missile whose job is to knock another missile out of the sky before it can hit something.
In a recent Iranian missile strike on Jordan, U.S. forces fired a large burst of Patriot and THAAD interceptors to stop a much smaller number of incoming ballistic missiles. Some Iranian warheads split into several pieces near the target, which makes stopping an attack harder — and burns through more expensive defensive shots.
The defenses helped prevent deaths in that strike, but aircraft at a base where U.S. forces operate still took damage. Iran’s attacks have also gotten more complicated (new paths, maneuvers, and missile types). Rapid use of interceptors is straining U.S. and allied stockpiles; rebuilding some inventories can take years because of production bottlenecks.

OpenAI eyes a huge pre-IPO raise (think $1.2T+)
Valuation is what investors say a company is worth based on what they’d pay for a slice of it. OpenAI has been talking with investors about raising more money at a valuation above $1.2 trillion — before an IPO (selling shares to the public). An IPO is now talked about for next year, not this year.
That’s a jump from an earlier 2026 valuation in the mid-hundreds of billions after a big financing that involved major tech and investment firms. OpenAI says it has huge user and business adoption, and revenue is climbing — but profitability is still a longer road, and rivals like Anthropic plus cheaper Chinese open-style models are pushing hard on price and features.
CEO Sam Altman has also flagged AI safety as a reason not to rush a public listing. Fast growth is exciting; it also means the tools you use in school and coding keep changing — and the companies behind them are racing each other for money and talent.

Why grocery and fuel prices feel weird right now
A lot of businesses don’t know whether higher fuel and other costs are temporary or here to stay — so they’re guessing differently on prices. Diesel recently jumped hard, and that ripples into trucking, plastics, and shelves at the store. When energy costs spike, some owners wait it out; others raise tags right away.
Examples of the split: a farmer holding meat and milk prices steady because he expects the fuel shock to fade (smaller profits for now); manufacturers of plastic parts who finally lifted prices after oil pushed up resin costs; pet-gear sellers adding a few percent after tariffs and fuel surcharges.
Some big brands are raising prices on lots of products. Walmart went the other way — cutting prices on thousands of items despite higher fuel costs, betting that cheaper checkout totals will pull in more shoppers. That’s why the same aisle can feel weird: one brand jumped, another looks “on sale.” It’s strategy as much as math — and it’s why family grocery bills don’t move in a straight line.

Oilers camp opens — Babcock era begins
Training camp opens today, Sep 16, under new head coach Mike Babcock (Cup winner with Detroit; back in the NHL after years away). Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl are healthy and ready after a long offseason. Last year McDavid led the league in scoring; Draisaitl was strong when available but finished the year dealing with injury timing.
Early buzz: a possible McDavid–Draisaitl–Podkolzin line from informal skates (not locked in). Camp absences include goalie Frederik Andersen and forward Matt Savoie (plus Janmark and Regula). First preseason game is Sep 19 vs Winnipeg; home opener Sep 29 vs the Canucks.
Context: after back-to-back Cup Final losses (2024–25) and a first-round exit last spring (lost to Anaheim in six), Edmonton wants a clearer regular-season identity — last year they were still finding their footing deep into November. Heading into camp, the room vibe has been “egos aside, stronger start.”
NHL sprinkle
- Avalanche: NHL.com’s season preview says the Cup window is still open — MacKinnon + Makar core, new pieces added, and a stingy goalie tandem that shared the Jennings Trophy for fewest goals allowed. Regular season starts Sep 29.
- Quick hits: Devils locked up Luke Evangelista on a big multi-year extension after acquiring him; Connor Bedard is the new Blackhawks captain (one of the youngest in franchise history).
NFL — Week 1 chaos
- Bears 59–37 over the Panthers — the highest-scoring Week 1 game in NFL history. Caleb Williams stacked pass + rush touchdowns; D’Andre Swift piled up three rushing scores. Pure chaos, in a fun way.
- Vikings beat the Packers (39–22) after an early QB change when Kyler Murray exited; Carson Wentz steered the comeback, including two TD passes to Justin Jefferson.
Baseball — NYC big
The Yankees clinched a playoff berth (their record 61st postseason appearance / ninth in ten years). Aaron Judge smashed his first homer since late May after returning from a fractured rib that cost him most of the summer — the kind of night that makes the Bronx loud again.
